Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

The high purity of Shell Rotella® DEF meets OEM requirements for diesel exhaust fluid used in SCR systems in diesel engine passenger cars, diesel pickups, commercial vehicles, and off-road equipment.

In addition, Shell Rotella® DEF:

• Helps to produce cleaner burning diesel engines along with diesel particulate filters
• Is formulated to work with Tier 4 Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) designed to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions*
• Conforms to manufacturing standards and certification requirements for API Certified DEF required by equipment manufacturers
• Is designed to breakdown at elevated temperatures to help meet maximum shelf life up to 2 years from the time of manufacture

*DEF is needed by all diesel vehicles equipped with a SCR system.

Shell Rotella^® DEF Usage

Shell Rotella® DEF is offered in a 2.5 gallon container and may be used in any vehicle diesel emission system using SCR technology requiring DEF. DEF usage depends on fuel usage, load of the vehicle, and the level of emissions the engine design naturally produces. On average, a usage rate of 1-2% of diesel fuel use is expected.

In light duty, the EPA requirement for DEF systems is a minimum of 4,000 miles between fill up of tank. Light duty car manufacturers often target a DEF fill up with an oil change for diesel pickups about every 5,000 to 7,000 miles.
