Shell Rotella® Greases Frequently Asked Questions

What is a grease?

Grease is a semi-solid lubricant that is made of 3 parts: a base oil, additives and a thickener.

What is the purpose of a grease?

The purpose of grease is to provide a layer of lubrication between moving parts to prevent wear. Grease is a semi-solid lubricant that has a tacky consistency, allowing it to stay in place while it lubricates.

Does the color of grease impact performance?

No. The color of grease is simply a dye and has no impact on performance. Grease comes in a variety of colors including red, gray, orange and more.

How long can unused grease be stored?

Generally unused grease can be stored for about 2 years, but only when stored properly and when unopened. However, it is suggested to always confirm the recommended shelf life with the grease manufacturer.

What is the best way to store a grease tube?

Grease tubes should be stored vertically with the cap facing up. This helps prevent leaks when separation occurs in the grease. Grease tubes should also be stored in a cool, clean, dry area and out of direct sunlight.

What is separation?

Separation or bleeding is when grease releases oil while being stored or while being worked. In storage conditions, separation can be identified by small pools of oil.

Is separation normal?

A little separation is normal. However, if you begin to notice excessive separation, it can be an indication that your grease has exceeded it’s shelf life.

Is it Ok to leave a grease tube in a grease gun when not in use?

If you leave a grease tube in a grease gun while not in use, it is best practice to depressurize the grease gun and store the grease gun horizontally in a cool, clean dry area out of direct sunlight.
