Houston – Shell Lubricants is expanding its portfolio with the introduction of Shell ROTELLA® Extended Life Coolant - Nitrite Free (ELC NF). The new coolant joins the Shell ROTELLA® coolant portfolio as the companion to Shell ROTELLA® Ultra ELC™. Both products are designed to meet the requirements of a growing segment of commercial vehicles that are moving to nitrite free engine antifreeze/coolant formulations to better protect aluminum components.

“Shell ROTELLA® ELC-NF was formulated to meet more severe operational conditions of modern, hot-running engines,” said Stede Granger, OEM technical manager, Shell Lubricants. “This is particularly important for new emission engines, especially those with exhaust gas recirculation.”

Shell ROTELLA® ELC-NF provides improved protection of aluminum components including modern brazed aluminum heat exchangers and meets many of the newest OEM specifications. The versatile formulation may also be used in fleets that include passenger cars and light duty trucks. The coolant is proven for extended life operation in medium and heavy duty diesel, gasoline, LNG and natural gas vehicles and engines.

Shell ROTELLA® ELC-NF offers outstanding heat transfer that is superior to conventional coolants as well as excellent cavitation (pitting) and related damage protection on cylinder liners. It can help extend the life of water pumps, radiators and other cooling system components. ROTELLA® ELC NF offers superior heat transfer compared to conventional coolants and is compatible with other extended-life coolants. Finally, it has no supplemental coolant additives (SCA) or extender use required for the life of the coolant.

“As engine technology advances, we continue to develop new products such as the Shell ROTELLA® ELC NF with our customer’s current and future maintenance needs in mind,” said Chris Guerrero, ‎Global Marketing Manager, Shell Lubricants. “We know our hardworking customers are looking for the best products that help them meet today’s and tomorrow’s challenges for on- and off-highway engines. Shell is excited to offer a new product that fulfills customer needs, and is a great addition to our coolant portfolio.”

Unlike other coolants, extended life coolants are designed to go 600,000 on-highway miles or 12,000 hours in commercial applications (and beyond with proper monitoring) and provide overall reduction in cooling system maintenance. Extended Life Coolants also offer complete cooling system component protection by helping to reduce water-pump failures, hard-water-scale deposits and silicate gel. Understanding the challenges faced by consumers, the Shell ROTELLA® coolant product portfolio has been designed to help make maintenance needs easier.

Notes to Editors:

Shell ROTELLA® Coolant Portfolio:

Shell ROTELLA® ELC NF joins the line of heavy-duty coolants by Shell ROTELLA® which includes Shell ROTELLA® Ultra ELC, Shell ROTELLA® Fully Formulated and Shell ROTELLA® ELC. Positioning a complete line of coolants under the Shell ROTELLA® brand complements the Shell ROTELLA® portfolio of heavy duty engine oils, which offer high-performance protection for today’s heavy duty diesel engines. All of the coolants are currently available in bulk, drums and gallon bottles.

Shell ROTELLA® ELC NF is designed for modern engines with higher output, aluminum radiators (heat exchangers), and the latest OEM specifications requiring nitrite free coolants. It is fully capable for extended life performance with a capability of 600,000 miles or 12,000 hours in commercial applications or 150,000 miles (6 years) in passenger cars and light trucks.

Shell ROTELLA® ELC NF meets the performance requirements of Detroit Diesel 93K217 to General Motors GM6277M and Navistar MPAPS B-1 Type IIIA (formerly International CEMS B-1), Type IIIA. The coolant provides the performance needed for your vehicle or stationary engine that requires an OAT type, nitrite free antifreeze/coolant. It is also suitable for conversion of existing equipment from nitrited or conventional coolant to nitrite free, extended life performance.

Shell ROTELLA® Ultra ELC™ is formulated to be an extended-life antifreeze/coolant in the heavy-duty engines found in on- and off-highway vehicles, and in marine, farm, mining and construction equipment. The product does not contain nitrites, amines, phosphates (NAP), borates or silicates.

Shell ROTELLA® Ultra ELC antifreeze/coolant provides protection in light-duty engines, making it highly suitable for mixed fleets that includes light-duty as well as heavy-duty gasoline and diesel engines. The product can provide protection for up to 12,000 hours or 600,000 miles in heavy-duty applications under normal operating conditions.  Shell ROTELLA®Ultra ELC antifreeze/coolant is available in two formulations - a pre-diluted 50/50 and a concentrate.

Shell ROTELLA® ELC utilizes organic additive technology corrosion inhibitors with nitrite and molybdate that protect cylinder liners from pitting corrosion damage.  The product provides excellent high-temperature protection and heat transfer. Shell ROTELLA® ELC helps reduce maintenance costs and improve water pump life. It also eliminates the need for supplemental coolant additives. Shell ROTELLA® ELC can provide protection for up to 12,000 hours or 600,000 miles with an extender added at 300,000 miles.

Shell ROTELLA® Fully Formulated contains SCAs to provide complete engine and cooling system protection. The product offers a highly stabilized, low-silicate formula that reduces deposits and the risks of hard water scale. Shell ROTELLA® Fully Formulated contains nitrite and molybdate to prevent corrosion damage from pitting on cylinder liners.

The product can provide protection for up to 200,000–250,000 miles/two-three years in heavy-duty applications under normal operating conditions, provided that the user monitors and maintains SCA additive levels.
